We recognise that Jesus spent time in specific places for allotted times in his earthly ministry. The church has identified two particular neighbourhoods in the city where we feel God has called us to build relationships and serve on an on-going basis. In the early autumn we prayer walked asking for the grace of God to be made known in those places.
To that end we went out once a week every week during the winter months and gave out free fuel (coal and briquettes) to over forty two families on a consistent basis. We were able to do that because of a financial grant we received from another church. We hope to engage in practical projects during the warmer months now on a weekly basis outside including painting of fences, cutting grass, picking up litter, dealing with graffiti.
We have no ambition to get people from these areas into our church building. What a narrow goal that would be. Rather we hope they see something of God and his kingdom meeting them where they are at right now. God isn’t found in buildings but rather where people gather in His Name.
In serving and building relationships with people we have found our own lives richer as we have made new friends. We are also learning to invest our lives in others and in so doing God by his Holy Spirit transforms our hearts so that they look more like Jesus.
We pray Jesus might be made famous in this city. In the words of St Patrick…
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.
