A Short History of Discovery Church, Galway
Discovery Church officially began in September of 2004 when a small team under the leadership of Alan Cullen began meeting in the Westwood House Hotel. In May, 2005, Alan and his wife Kelly felt God leading them to go and live in the United States where they now work as part of a pastoral team. They have continued to have a wonderfully positive relationship with this local church and we still miss them.
Following Alan’s departure, Paul Cullen took over the position of Senior Leader in the church. Paul, originally from Dublin, is married to Caroline and they have three children. Paul completed his degree in theology at Regents College, England. He has also worked on staff at a church in the United States, running a discipleship course called Masters Commission.
During 2007, another church in the city called Galway Pentecostal Church, which was originally established in 1995, began talking and praying with Paul about the possibility of the two churches uniting. This church was under the leadership of William Nolan, a local fisherman, who along with his wife Teresa has been caring for people for many years. Both churches felt they shared a common vision and values and that by coming together they might better achieve that vision.
They united in September 2007 and decided to keep the name Discovery. Paul continued in his role as Senior Leader (Pastor) and William retained his position of Elder.
